How To Make Galaxy Cookies For Matariki

Follow along this step by step guide to create galaxy themed star cookies! Whether for a galaxy-themed party or a meaningful activity to celebrate Matariki, they add magic to gatherings and offer a chance to learn and discuss Matariki's significance. Dive into this fun baking project and create beautiful treats while exploring the stars together.

Glaze Ingredients

1. Bake Your Star Cookies

2. Mix the Icing/Glaze

  • In a large bowl, whisk the icing sugar, extract, and milk until smooth. Optionally, add honey or light corn syrup for a shinier finish.
  • The glaze should be thick enough to stay on the cookies but fluid enough to dip easily. Adjust the consistency as needed: add more milk to make it thinner or more icing sugar to make it thicker.

3. Prepare and Swirl the Glaze

  • Divide the glaze into four small bowls.
  • Working with one bowl at a time, use a toothpick to add a small amount of gel food colouring to the glaze. Add around 2-3 different colours then swirl the colouring through the glaze using a toothpick to create a galaxy-like effect. Tip: add different colours to each bowl to create varied galaxy cookies.

4. Dip the Cookies

  • Holding each cookie at the base, dip the surface into the swirled glaze.
  • Adjust patterns as needed by adding more food colouring to the glaze.

5. Decorate with Sprinkles

  • While the glaze is still wet, sprinkle each cookie with edible star sprinkles to represent the stars of Matariki.
  • Optionally, add edible lustre dust for extra sparkle.

6. Allow to Set

  • Let the cookies rest for around 30 minutes until the glaze hardens.
